WEEK 6 (September 21 - September 25)

Here’s some information regarding the week of Monday, September 21st - Friday September 25th

ONLINE STUDENT ASSESSMENT: On Monday, September 21st and Tuesday, September 22nd, Mr. Olsen’s 2020-2021 Fourth Grade Class will be focusing our Zoom instructional sessions on completing District-mandated assessments with our students.  We will be conducting testing in English Language Arts and Math using the Northwestern Evaluation Association’s (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) online assessment tool.  This will take place during our Zoom instructional time on Monday and Tuesday between 10:30am-12noon. Students should join our Zoom meetings as they typically do on these days.

We will be testing English Language Arts skills on Monday and Math skills on Tuesday.  Those students who participated in our English Language Arts “trial run” with Mr. Moore last Friday will be given the option to get a head start on their daily classwork while those who did not take the English Language Arts test on Friday will be testing during Zoom time on Monday.  ALL students will be taking the Math assessment on Tuesday during our Zoom time.  Students will still be given classwork to work on during the afternoon, as well.  Our typical Zoom instructional days will resume on Wednesday.  The results of your child’s testing will be shared with you during Parent-Teacher Conferences, to be held through Zoom on October 8th and October 9th.  Information regarding how to sign-up for Parent-Teacher Conference times will be shared with families next week.

WEEK 5 (September 14 - September 18)

Here’s a brief look at what to expect for the week of Monday, September 14th - Friday September 18th

VIRTUAL “BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT”:  Our “Back to School Night” with be taking place online this year due to the unprecedented pandemic conditions we are experiencing.

I will be conducting a Zoom Meeting on WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th from 6:30PM -7:00PM for parents to join through their child’s school-issued Google accounts and internet-connected devices.  The Zoom Meeting Room is my regular classroom instructional Zoom Meeting space that can be accessed through the invite in our Google Classroom.  In addition, I have made another heading under the “Classwork” tab (“Back To School Night” heading) that will take you directly to my Zoom space that evening.

BEFORE SEPTEMBER 16th, PLEASE WATCH THE BACK TO SCHOOL VIDEOS I HAVE POSTED IN THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM (available to watch after 4pm on Monday September 14th).

This is VERY important, as I will be describing what to expect this year and showing families how to effectively navigate our Google Classroom.  These videos can be found under the “Back To School Night” heading in our Google Classroom.

This is being asked so that I can spend our Back to School Night Zoom Meeting focused on answering parent questions and clearing up any confusion with the procedures & expectations associated with Mr. Olsen’s 2020-2021 Fourth Grade Class.

Looking forward to seeing you all Wednesday night!

SCHEDULE:  Please continue to reference the “Daily Schedule” to see what your child should be attending to each day.  There is a link to this schedule listed under the “Daily Class Schedule” heading in the “Classwork” tab of our Google Classroom.

MUSIC AND P.E.:  Students will be receiving Music and P.E. instruction online once a week.

Music classes will occur from 9:30am-10:00am every Tuesday.  These classes are led by our new Music teacher, Ms. Thoreson.  Students can get access to her Zoom Instructional Meetings through the Google Classroom or through the Daily Class Schedule (see above).

P.E. classes will occur from 9:30am-9:50am every Thursday.  These classes are led by Coach Mac.  As with Music, students can get access to her Zoom Instructional Meetings through the Google Classroom or through the Daily Class Schedule (see above).

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  A list of recommended school supplies was posted in the Google Classroom three weeks ago.

The list of requested supplies can be found here...

https://classroom.google.com/u/0/c/MTI3MjA4MjE3OTk4/a/MTMwNTMxOTQ1MTUx/details

Thank you to all the families that were able to secure these supplies.  If you could not get the supplies listed, please make an attempt to do so soon.  If there is a problem in acquiring supplies, please let me know with an email to [email protected].

Additionally, many families were able to pickup the Math workbooks, Social Studies materials, composition books, pencils, and crayons that were distributed in front of Dayton School on Friday, September 4th.  These materials will be utilized by your students as the year proceeds, but DO NOT do the activities in these materials without being given direct instruction from Mr. Olsen ahead of time.

If you were unable to pickup the supplies bag, please contact our principal, Mr. Moore, to arrange a new pickup day.  He can be reached by email at [email protected].

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS:  Here are some important items to remember from messages posted on this teacher page during the first three weeks of school…

Zoom Morning Meetings continue to start at 10:30am daily.  Live Zoom instruction will proceed each day from 10:30am to 12noon.

I provide “Office Time" from 10:00am-10:30am each morning for students who need extra assistance with classwork, those that have questions, or any other school related support.

A preview of what we'll be doing each day can be found at Mr. Olsen's Fourth Grade Google Classroom by taking a look at the "TODAY'S INSTRUCTIONAL SCHEDULE" post on the opening Stream page.

The classwork expected to be completed independently AFTER live Zoom instruction is listed under "TODAY"S INSTRUCTIONAL SCHEDULE", as well.  Note that assignments will not be posted for student access in advance of the school day.  Each day's assignments will be accessible AFTER live Zoom instruction so that students do not attempt independent work prior to being given the necessary instruction to work on their tasks. This also fosters the practice of students attending to a day-to-day routine of self-guided, afternoon classwork.

You may also notice a "Focus" listed at the top of each day's instructional schedule.  This gives you a general idea of the key areas of study being looked at each day.

Please understand that our continued goal is to start at a GRADUAL pace.  The intensity of student academic demands will increase as the school year proceeds. But right now, our aim is the introduce students into the virtual learning environment at a deliberate pace in order to build learning-at-home stamina & resilience.

If your child craves additional academic work after having completed each day's classwork, please have them explore the online learning links offered in my Google Classroom.  There are TONS of challenging, interesting, and fun resources there to keep your child engaged and learning.

Please contact me through ClassDojo or email me at [email protected] with any questions, comments, or concerns..Issues involving technology can be addressed through our District tech personnel at [email protected].

Thank you.

Be well.  Stay safe.

WEEK 4 (September 8 - September 11)

Here’s some important information to keep in mind for the week of Tuesday, September 8th - Friday September 11th

DAILY SCHEDULE:  To assist students and families with structuring the school day, I’ve provided a daily schedule that can be found in our Google Classroom under the “Daily Class Schedule” heading in the “Classwork” tab.

This schedule gives times for each day’s student tasks.  Additionally, direct links can be found for these tasks and students can click these links to be taken straight to the location associated with each period of the day.

Students should consult this schedule daily in order to organize their school day.  It is recommended that students provide themselves with appropriately timed breaks within their day to play or enjoy a snack before moving on to the next academic assignment.

You can also access this schedule by clicking the following link…

Mr. Olsen

WEEK 1 (August 20 - August 21)

I am Mr. Olsen and, chances are, if you’re on this page then you are probably in my fourth grade classroom for the 2020-2021 school year at Dayton school! Congratulations! I look forward to an exciting and unusual fourth grade experience with you this year.

Feel free to consult this page whenever you need to get classroom information about Mr. Olsen‘s fourth grade class at Dayton School. I will try to update this page as often as possible. On this teacher page, you can find important information regarding our fourth grade class.

Thursday, August 20th is our first day of class. It is a very short introduction day. In order to join the classroom, you will need to come to the first day’s Zoom meeting at 8:30 AM. Please be on time! Students will only be meeting for 20 minutes in order to get students comfortable with joining the Zoom morning meeting and have an opportunity to meet their new teacher:  Me!  Mr. Olsen.

Friday, August 21st will also involve a short 20 minute Zoom meeting.  On Friday, I will show students our Google classroom (see below) and how to navigate its functions.

We are currently awaiting the schedule for next week.  Once I have that information, I will post it here and through the communication resources I describe below.

I have sent information to each parent’s email (the emails that are on file with the Dayton School office). This information gives the login information for joining the Zoom morning meeting.

Additionally I have sent an invitation to each student enrolled in my classroom to join our Google classroom. In the Google classroom students can login and get information on how to join the Zoom morning meetings as well. Students can join by going to their school-issued Google email accounts and accepting the invitation to join the Google classroom.  If you do not know your email address and or password, please contact me immediately so that I can get that information to students as soon as possible (you can email me at [email protected] or send a message through ClassDojo-see below for more information on that).

Once students have joined my Google classroom, they should feel free to explore some of the links that are listed on that resource. As the school year proceeds I will continue to list assignments, information, and learning links that will be necessary for actively engaging in Mr. Olsen‘s fourth grade classroom. Students should check in on this page each day in order to see what new assignments they may have or what new information is being presented.

I have also reached out to the parents of students in Mr. Olsen‘s fourth grade classroom through an application called ClassDojo. Many of you may already be familiar with this app. It is a convenient way to communicate with parents, families, and for you to communicate back with me. If you haven’t already joined ClassDojo, please do so through this invitation link –

https://www.classdojo.com/invite/?c=CAUEH86.

It is extremely important that each family be connected through ClassDojo, as I will be using this as my primary method of communicating to parents regarding important information they need to know.

If you do not know your school-issued Google email address and or password, please contact me immediately so that I can get that information to students as soon as possible.

Finally, I will be posting a link here to Mr. Olsen’s fourth grade class website in the near future.  Ms. Bauman, the other 4th grade teacher here, has been patiently helping me develop my website (Thanks, Ms. Bauman!).  Learning all these new digital tricks for distance learning has been difficult for an “old dog” like me (this is my 22nd year teaching in the District), but I enjoy the challenge!  When it’s all set, I’ll let you know promptly!

I want to thank you all in advance for your patience as we navigate these uncharted waters together.  I understand that there are going to be A LOT of questions as we move forward through the school year.  I will try to answer them as best I can and as promptly as possible (as a parent of 3 children myself, I’ve got a pretty “full-plate” beyond the classroom, too!).  However, if there are issues associated with technology, please consult our school district tech experts for assistance.  They can be emailed at [email protected]

Please keep in mind that we are ALL being challenged to learn new skills and adapt to a new way of learning.  It is certainly NOT ideal.  We will need to go at a slightly reduced pace given the circumstances and there will most certainly be many problems along the way. But, despite these adversities, I am driven to put forth my best effort in making fourth grade a productive and engaging experience for our students.

Looking forward to getting to know the students and families of Mr. Olsen’s fourth grade class throughout this unprecedented time in our lives!

Thank you.

Be well.  Stay safe.

Mr. Olsen
